Depression Clinic - What to Expect,
What to Bring, What to Say

You've made the decision to seek help for your depression,
here's what to expect when you get to the depression clinic.

Depression clinics are off shoots of hospitals in your area.

Making the decision to get help for your depression could be one of the most important decisions of your life. The counseling and possible medication that you can at the depression clinic can change your life, giving you hope where you used to feel hopeless.

During your first visit to a depression clinic, you will have what is called an intake evaluation. Through a series of depression tests, your counselor will determine the best course of treatment for depression, which typically consists of talk therapy in one on one sessions and possible anti depressant medications.

You most likely will not enter into any group therapy sessions right away, although they may be an option later in your treatment.

What to bring to the depression clinic appointment

You will need to bring a list of any medications you are taking, your insurance card (if you have insurance, otherwise you may be referred to a low income or free depression clinic. Don't get upset if this happens, you'll still get the help you need,) and you'll need to come prepared to tell the truth.

Most misdiagnoses of types of depression happen as a result of the counselor not having all of the information. Tell them exactly what you have been feeling. If you have been thinking about suicide, you will need to tell them that.

Don't worry if you can't put your finger on why you are depressed. Many types of depression are not the result of a specific situation, although some are.

Your counselor is a trained mental health professional, and will be able to ask leading questions which will help bring the underlying problem to the surface.

Feel free to bring anything else to the depression clinic that you think will help. If you keep a daily journal, bring it.

If you feel like you won't know what to say or want to ask questions, jot them down before your appointment.

The first session is to determine the right course of action, so the more information, the better.
