Adolescent Depression
and how it affects pre-teenagers
Adolescent depression differs slightly from teenage depression. Learn what to look for in your 10-13 year old.
In her book "Conquering Stress," by C.J. Green, C.J. discusses some typical causes and conditions surrounding depression, but in your 10-13 year old, adolescent depression symptoms may be harder to recognize.
During this period of adolescent development, pre-teens tend to spend much of their time while at home in their rooms. Most of this is developmentally normal, but if your adolescent is exhibiting these symptoms, you may want to consider adolescent depression as the cause.
Major apathy toward family and school. This, again, is partly developmental. But if your child talks about dropping out of sports or extra curricular activities at school, they may be experiencing teasing or feelings of inadequacy.
Refusal to eat with the family or picking at their plates can be a form of adolescent depression which can lead to more severe disorders, such as bulimia or anorexia.
Writing or drawing disturbing pictures or stories. This can be a form of self expression wherein your child is working through feelings, but more likely something has happened to them that they are unable or unwilling to discuss.
Dressing provocatively or dark, another form of self expression and expressing their individuality, or treading on dangerous ground. This acting out adolescent depression is a boundary testing phase.
You need to continue to install your family values while allowing them to be themselves - not an easy tightrope to walk for most parents.
If your child is dressing in a dangerous way (very provocative or drawing/cutting on themselves) you should seek immediate depression testing to find out of there is an underlying factor, or if they are experiencing adolescent depression.
Virtually all pre-teens will experience some form of adolescent depression, but it is typically mild and they will "grow out of it."
Knowing what to look for, however, can mean the difference between moving through this phase of development successfully or moving into a deeper form of depression.
